A New England Post and Beam Home

From the design and engineering phase to the finished timber frame. Here is a wonderful example of a New England post and beam home.
Using traditional joinery and hand hewn white pine timbers the frame is craned into place and raised by Vermont Timber Works. Our crew does a great job, they have fun and it shows.

Look at the hand hewn timber, this frame looks like it's been in place for years and years.

From the kitchen area, throughout the first floor, you can see the post and beam construction and the warmth it creates.

Looking up to the loft and the 2nd floor area, this frame is a full timber frame, no doubt about that.

Here is our 2nd floor, they skylights add desired natural light. Very pretty.

Done. Now that is a New England Post and Beam Home. The addition in hand hewn white pine looks like it has always been there...Congrats Vermont Timber Works.

Post and Beam Pavilion for The Fort Harrison State Park.

Rough sawn timbers were chosen for this post and beam pavilion. Steel Joinery as needed for the scissor trusses. We built several picnic shelter frames and a comfort station entry using Southern Yellow Pine, Oak and Cedar for the Fort Harrison State Park.

The Chase House, Post & Beam Construction

The Chase House, Post & Beam Construction by Vermont Timber Works, Inc.
The Chase House is one of our most popular post and beam homes. Sue and I receive many calls regarding budgetary pricing for it. Although we custom design and engineer each timber frame, many times we start with a project like the this one and customize it to suit the individual needs of the client. Here is the 24 X 40 floor plan, feel free to use it for ideas.

Charming & rustic with rough sawn hemlock timber and traditional joinery. The kitchen cabinetry looks to be custom also, beautiful.

Classic and clean the painted walls ready set off the timber frame, I just love it.

This photo gets your attention, the finished exterior. Just gorgeous and a wonderful example of post & beam construction.

Post & Beam Entry Truss with Curved Beams

Curved beams and arches create a wonderful timber entry for this North Conway, NH Church. Our Lady of the Mountains.

Traditional joinery and planed and chamfered timbers, designed and engineered for the North Conway area. The porte cochere is also douglas fir timber, select structural and painted.

Painting the timber usually makes me cringe, but in this case, I really like the finished result. Good job Vermont Timber Works & Richard Monahan!

Post and Beam Kitchen Area, very nice!

This home has a full post and beam frame in native hemlock timbers. Rustic look continues right into the kitchen and I really like the peninsula. It separates the dining room just enough. Even in a combination of conventional and heavy timber construction we can include those ceiling beams.

Each timber frame project is custom designed to suit and we are happy to offer that. No cookie cutter or kit homes from Vermont Timber Works. Not that there is anything wrong with that...it's just not our way.

The Post and Beam Process.

If you are considering a post and beam home, here are some examples of what to expect. Questions? Call Vermont Timber Works @ 802-886-1917, we are happy to help.

This is how it starts. Take your ideas to an architect and get that floor plan going! This floor plan has every thing you need for a single story home. The post and beam layout can be designed from that point. Making sure you LOVE it on paper first.

OK, now is the fun part, watching your timber frame home come together. The 3D renderings are part of our design and engineering stage.
Ready?

The timbers arrive and the bents are put together on the ground, craned into place.
Vermont Timber Works raises quite a few of our post and beam frames.

Careful !!

Watching the post and beam being raised is a wonderful experience. Especially when it is yours.

Gorgeous timbers! (and blue sky of course).

This is what your post and beam frame looks like when we leave. Ready to be finished off by your general contractor and other subcontractors.

Is a Horse Barn in your future?

Horse Barns are one of the many structures that post and beam construction is wonderful for.

Timbers in rough sawn hemlock make for a rustic look and using native timber is sometimes a cost savings. This frame shown is not a horse barn, it's a party barn and located in Dublin, NH.

Now this is an equipment barn and I think the layout would make a great horse barn. Stalls on either side, hay loft in the center, throw the hay right down into the stalls....!

At Vermont Timber Works we are chosen for many types of timber frames, including lots of BARNS!

Horse Barn Anyone?

How about a horse barn in post and beam construction? Hemlock timbers are a good start, especially in the horsey areas....they tend not to chew it as much (though mine do if they are bored). Douglas Fir is great for strength and larger spans, not to mention a beautiful choice. Do you want a working horse barn? How about a workshop that resembles a horse barn? Whatever your barn dreams are, if they include timber framing, we are ready to talk with you.

Post and Beam Horse Barn by Vermont Timber Works, Inc.

This post and beam horse barn can be found on Martha's Vineyard. With rough sawn hemlock timbers and traditional joinery, mortise and tenon with hardwood pegs. These are some lucky horses!
The loft area needed to be strong enough for hay storage, and it is. (We run engineering on all of our frames). Thank you Peter Zelonis, P.E. @ Vermont Timber Works.

Post and Beam Construction in White Oak...

Interested in something a little different? Hand hewn white oak could be for you. At Vermont Timber Works we work with many wood species. Todd Jackson does much of our hand hewing (great job). Oak is a very beautiful hardwood.

This sample is going out to Joe Dan Richarson of Taconic Builders for approval on a project in Greenwich, CT. It's beautiful, I'm sure his client will approve!
