Ruby's new bed @ Vermont Timber Works, Inc.

As many of you may know, Ruby is Dan's beloved boxer dog. She comes to work with Dan almost every day and is very helpful around our timber framing shop. Whether it's helping Steve eat his lunch, drooling on Travis or supervising the VTW Crew loading timber trusses onto a GMH Transport truck...it's a tough life.

Since we love Ruby so much, she has a new bed, (thank you Steve) carefully placed in her favorite spot.

Well, mine isn't. (I don't even have a guest house). This guest house is all post and beam constructed. Traditional joinery and arched beams in beautiful douglas fir timbers.

Planed & chamfered with a clear poly sealer. See the natural color of the wood? Douglas fir will continue to age and become deeper in color over time. The Duker guest house is the 3rd post and beam barn on the estate. Very nice Vermont Timber!

Perhaps something like Vermont Timber Works Osprey Horse Barn will do. Though, it may be a little on the large size. Hemlock timbers are a good choice for horse barns. Do you know why?

In the midst of post and beam construction, I would like to take a moment and give you an idea of who we are. Our post & beam team consists of Dan, Doug, Rick, Tom, Pete, Denise, Megan, Mike, Kellin, James, Jason, Todd, MJ, Travis and myself (Sandy).

Dan, the grill master, also Vermont Timber Works President.

Pete & Doug (VP's) are in charge of design, shop drawings and engineering. Rick is our estimator and works on timber frame layout and fabrication as needed. Rick also gives Ruby rides in his convertible.

Denise is our financial officer, Megan our office manager, Travis and I work in SALES. Once the detailed shop drawings hit the shop floor, that is when the real fun begins. Each timber is handcrafted, no cnc machines at Vermont Timber. Cut Crew and Raising Crew are the same. Great job VTW team.

A Few Wood Choices for your Post & Beam Project.

Hand Hewn White Oak.

Strong and rustic, a good choice for many types of post and beam applications. Most recently a large post and beam barn in Auburn, PA. Expect lots of checking, which will not effect the strength.

Douglas Fir Timbers, Planed & Chamfered

Always a good idea. Douglas Fir is beautiful, strong, stable and available in many larger sizes and longer widths. If you can build your post and beam building with Douglas Fir, you may need a GLULAM.

Hand Hewn Eastern White Pine

White Pine is not as strong a hemlock, douglas fir or oak, BUT is a very traditional and popular posts and beam wood choice. Hand hewn for a more rustic look, or planed & chamfered for a more finished style.
FYI. Horses like to chew pine...

Reclaimed Timber

Depending on the species and condition, best used in decorative post and beam situations. Hard to work with, sometimes difficult to find, and always more expensive. A look like nothing else, worth it if you love it.

Native Hemlock

Shown above planed & chamfered, we prefer the rough sawn finish. Hemlock timbers are great for post and beam horse barns (horses tend not to chew on it). Post and beam pavilions, houses, as long as the lengths are not toooooo long. Then we are looking at douglas fir again.

All the posts and beams are carefully labeled, joints are pre-fit to insure a proper installation.

Mike hard at work, each timber is hand crafted. No CNC machines at Vermont Timber Works.

Above Kellin is trying not to smile :) as he works with a mortising machine. Once the timbers are fabricated, it's time for sanding and finishing. Below are some of the completed pieces, natural minwax stain and red oak timbers.

MJ and Jason are organizing the finished timbers. (They don't mind the camera). Ruby, of course, is supervising.

We all know about the posts and the beams but what keeps the timber frame up? Above is a typical section view to give you an idea of the many components. Connecting beams together in ways that are strong and beautiful is KEY. Timbers need to be sized appropriately and joints need to stay tight over time.

Vermont Timber Works offers traditional joinery, mortise and tenon with hard wood pegs. The joint itself carries most of the load and the peg keeps the joint in place. Steel joinery is also available.

Post and Beam and Building GREEN! Why choose a timber frame? Natural timber is renewable, can be recycled, beautiful (not that beauty has anything to do with building green) and timber is sustainable.

We all know of an old post and beam barn that has fallen in or been taken down. Company's like James & Company and Trestlewood search out these old timbers for re-sale...and there is quite a market for it. Standing dead timber is also a wonderful resource.

At Vermont Timber Works, we pride ourselves on hand crafting post and beam constructed buildings of the highest quality. NO CNC machines in our North Springfield shop. You are not restricted by what can be programed into the hundegger! You are restricted however by what will work and what may not. Our Professional Engineer, PJZ makes sure that each post and beam design will stand over time. Thank you Pete! The work week usually consists of Monday through Friday, but an occasional Saturday is worked if need be. When the weekend comes, these timber framers like to have fun!

Would you like to know what Vermont Timber Works hard working team does on the weekend? Well if so, here you go. So far we have pictures submitted by Doug (who loves to sail), Sue (who also enjoys being on the water) and Sandy, that's me (horses and swimming all summer long).

Pete enjoys many outdoor activities, taking the canoe out with the family for one. Todd likes to hang with friends and ride his motorcycle.

Rosenthal Beam / Reclaimed White Oak

Approved. Thank you Austin Patterson Disston Architects! Sometimes when working with reclaimed timbers, you just can't find what is specified and in this case the beam we needed was structural. Doug and the Trestlewood crew found this gorgeous antique beam with hand hewn sides and a rounded bottom as a substitution. This will be the only beam with a rounded edge, and we think it will be perfect as a structural ceiling beam. Perhaps even the focal point of the room.

Our very own Doug is on the road today, meeting with the Trestlewood folks at their Indiana Mill. Vermont Timber Works has ordered more reclaimed hand hewn white oak for the Rosenthal Project. Remember the Davis hand hewn oak timbers? Here is a picture to remind you:

The timbers that Trestlewood has chosen for us will be very similar to what we used on the Davis job. Authentic. The reclaimed timbers are located from demo projects all over the country. If you know of a post and beam barn or building that is being taking down, give Trestlewood a call. They may be able to help place those timbers.

Lets talk about post & beam construction. When I joined Vermont Timber Works I knew very little about post & beam construction. Posts are the vertical timbers, beams are the horizontal timbers and of course the braces. AND all of these things seemed to be in the way when designing a custom kitchen into a post and beam home. Well, since then, I've learned about the other timber members that are needed. From the exposed timber trusses to the plates, connectors, rafters and/or purlins, depending on the design. Ridge beams, hammer beams, hammer posts, ties, girts, struts...and more.

Doug is on the road contracted as site supervisor for the raising of the Davis Residence Post and Beam. Phase one consists of the structural center section, which is also the focal point of the design. This post and beam constructed frame features reclaimed hand hewn white oak from James & Company. The timbers are reclaimed from various barns and buildings all over the country and delivered to Alabama for hand selection.

Why not? The Vermont Timber Works boys are having a little fun during lunch break. Travis is behind the plate, Toddy is pitching and Kellin, Jason and Mikey all take a turn at bat. Ruby is supervising, as usual.

Kellin did get a few nice hits and Todd did a good job pitching to everyone.

Jason usually hits them over the fence...BUT not today. Oh well, it's all in fun.

Look out RUBY! Heads up!

Mikey gets a hit, wish I was closer here. Mike is on our cut team hand crafts our timber frames using classic timber framing tools like framing chisels, mortising machines, beam saws, peg drills, slicks and more. Jason, Kellin and James are also on our cut team.

Now that Spring has sprung this field will get much use. Our Springfield, VT school system uses this for baseball and softball. The late afternoons can be quite interesting at Vermont Timber Works. Only now and then do we get a ball bounced off the building :)

The Davis Project is coming together, after a long search for the reclaimed white oak timbers.

Fabrication is complete and the pre-assembly begins! Doug, Todd and MJ will prefit, adjust as needed and label each timber. This will insure proper installation on job site.

As you can see, Kramer is very involved in the pre-assembly process.

As is Ruby.

At Vermont Timber Works we always pre-assemble as needed, usually not to this extent. The reclaimed timbers are so much more difficult to work with, this extra work is important. Doug will be going to the Davis Project in a site supervisory role and Michael Davis Construction will raise this frame. With any luck we will see you next week Angela!

Interested in going green with your timber frame? Vermont Timber Works can help and is happy to help.

Some choices for your consideration are:

1. FSC Certified Timbers. Timbers from mills and forests that have been approved by the Forest Stewardship Council. (because forests matter) Our Katonah Bathhouse Project has Douglas Fir # 1 Better FSC Timbers. (Thanks Disdero Lumber Co.) Take a look at those LONGS!

2. Standing Dead Timbers. This is a great option for LEED points.

3. Reclaimed, Recycled or Salvaged Timbers. Resawing is an option, leave as is for the most rustic look. Reclaimed White Oak pictured below is courtesy of James and Company.

4. Location, location, location. Vermont Timber Works can work with a timber mill that is with in 500 miles of your project. That can earn LEED points.

5. Finish Options...Going with a sealer or stain that has low emissions is a good thing.

Doug and Peter design using Data CAD and develop detailed shop drawings which are then approved by the project architect and/or engineer. One approved, these shop drawings hit the shop floor and the fabrication begins. Need a professional engineer's stamp? Not a problem, right PJZ?

Meet Lil, she's our Lull. Lil comes in real handy for all sorts of things. Maneuvering the heavy timbers can be a challenge do to the weight and length of the beams. Lil works like a fork lift and has a nice reach also. Here Kellin is at the helm as we load fully assembled douglas fir trusses for our Spruce Peak Lodge Project in Stowe, VT. Mike is helping with Hercules, our fork truck.

Hercules and Lil make a great team... Great job Vermont Timber Works!

Please allow 12-14 weeks for an average size timber framing project. Planning ahead is key when choosing the custom route, whether it be custom cabinetry, custom tile arrangements or our custom designed and hand crafted post and beam timber frames. You won't find hand hewn white oak timbers like this sitting on a shelf somewhere! Isn't that beautiful? And certainly worth the wait. How about reclaimed timber? That is a tough one sometimes for lead time...as we are reminded right now.

Now this is the most exciting part, the raising of your post and beam frame (my opinion of course)! The crew at Vermont Timber Works takes as much pride and care in their raisings as they do in fabrication and assembly. The handcrafted quality shows. Take a look at some of my personal favorite timber frame raisings...Our Brigham Hill Barn.

The Charney Residence Post and Beam Home was my first raising. It was so fun to watch and I learned so much about our traditional joinery. Coordination between the crane and the Vermont Timber Works team needs to be right on!
Here is our Kenny Stable Horse Barn, which can be found on Martha's Vinyard. These lucky horses are surrounded by beautiful douglas fir timbers, planed & chamfered for a smooth and classic look.

If you like something a bit more rustic, take a look at our Sand's Barn. This post and beam party barn features rough sawn and weathered hemlock timbers. AND traditional joinery, of course!

In the snow? Of course!

The snow banks at Vermont Timber Works are much higher than in the above picture...and we are getting more snow. (We do not need any more snow)! The guys have been out working in this lovely weather, take a look. Some timber trusses and cupolas are just to big to be assembled in our shop.

Like this timber frame cupola in rough sawn hemlock timber for the Ferrisburg Town Hall Project. Fully assembled in our front door yard, it was great entertainment for Sue and I.

Loaded up and ready to go. Great job guys! It was very cold and windy that day. Below we have some of the Spruce Peak Custom Timber Trusses, 52ft long in douglas fir creating an 80ft span!

Pete is our professional engineer, involved in the preliminary engineering, through out the design and he gets to put his stamp on all of our timber frames.

Rick, our estimator, has been working with Doug & Dan for 20 years. You should hear them when they start joking around, it's great. Rick also does layout and pretty much everything! Most recently Rick has been working on many estimates for Sue and I, the John Mazur project as well as Spruce Peak.

Post and Beam Construction, shown here in our Veterans Memorial Chapel. Using native pine and hemlock timbers and steel rods in the girder trusses, this little chapel is very pretty. Located in Randolph, Vermont, overlooking a valley, with a breathtaking view.

Our Immaculate Conception Church located in Nashua, NH has a very different look & feel. Arched timber trusses in Douglas Fir and supported by a steel frame. Gorgeous post and beam church!

From the design and engineering phase to the finished timber frame. Here is a wonderful example of a New England post and beam home.
Using traditional joinery and hand hewn white pine timbers the frame is craned into place and raised by Vermont Timber Works. Our crew does a great job, they have fun and it shows.

Look at the hand hewn timber, this frame looks like it's been in place for years and years.

From the kitchen area, throughout the first floor, you can see the post and beam construction and the warmth it creates.

Looking up to the loft and the 2nd floor area, this frame is a full timber frame, no doubt about that.

Here is our 2nd floor, they skylights add desired natural light. Very pretty.

Done. Now that is a New England Post and Beam Home. The addition in hand hewn white pine looks like it has always been there...Congrats Vermont Timber Works.

Although we custom design and engineer each timber frame, many times we start with a project like the this one and customize it to suit the individual needs of the client. Curved beams and arches create a wonderful timber entry for this North Conway, NH Church. Our Lady of the Mountains.

Traditional joinery and planed and chamfered timbers, designed and engineered for the North Conway area. The porte cochere is also douglas fir timber, select structural and painted.

Painting the timber usually makes me cringe, but in this case, I really like the finished result. Good job Vermont Timber Works & Richard Monahan!

This home has a full post and beam frame in native hemlock timbers. Rustic look continues right into the kitchen and I really like the peninsula. It separates the dining room just enough. Even in a combination of conventional and heavy timber construction we can include those ceiling beams.

Each timber frame project is custom designed to suit and we are happy to offer that. No cookie cutter or kit homes from Vermont Timber Works. Not that there is anything wrong with that...it's just not our way.

This is how it starts. Take your ideas to an architect and get that floor plan going! This floor plan has every thing you need for a single story home. The post and beam layout can be designed from that point. Making sure you LOVE it on paper first.

OK, now is the fun part, watching your timber frame home come together. The 3D renderings are part of our design and engineering stage.

Is a Horse Barn in your future?

Horse Barns are one of the many structures that post and beam construction is wonderful for.

Timbers in rough sawn hemlock make for a rustic look and using native timber is sometimes a cost savings. This frame shown is not a horse barn, it's a party barn and located in Dublin, NH.

Now this is an equipment barn and I think the layout would make a great horse barn. Stalls on either side, hay loft in the center, throw the hay right down into the stalls....!

How about a horse barn in post and beam construction? Hemlock timbers are a good start, especially in the horsey areas....they tend not to chew it as much (though mine do if they are bored). Douglas Fir is great for strength and larger spans, not to mention a beautiful choice. Do you want a working horse barn? How about a workshop that resembles a horse barn? Interested in something a little different? Hand hewn white oak could be for you. At Vermont Timber Works we work with many wood species. Todd Jackson does much of our hand hewing (great job). Oak is a very beautiful hardwood.
