Pre-Assembly & Reclaimed White Oak Timbers

Working with reclaimed hand hewn timbers is a challege that Vermont Timber Works crew is up too!

This post and beam timber frame is created with all reclaimed hand hewn white oak.

Pre-assembled in our shop, each joint scribed into place...time consuming but this needs to be done. Traditional joinery for a very rustic post and beam project.

Our very own Doug is on the road today, meeting with the Trestlewood folks at their Indiana Mill. Vermont Timber Works has ordered more reclaimed hand hewn white oak for the Rosenthal Project. Remember the Davis hand hewn oak timbers? Here is a picture to remind you:

The timbers that Trestlewood has chosen for us will be very similar to what we used on the Davis job. Authentic. The reclaimed timbers are located from demo projects all over the country. If you know of a post and beam barn or building that is being taking down, give Trestlewood a call. They may be able to help place those timbers.

Vermont Timber Works hand crafts post and beam homes in not only reclaimed timbers but also resawn timbers, green timbers, antiqued or weathered timbers and even some kiln dried timbers. Depending on your design and what you envision, we can help you decide which is best timber option for you.

Doug is on the road contracted as site supervisor for the raising of the Davis Residence Post and Beam. Phase one consists of the structural center section, which is also the focal point of the design. This post and beam constructed frame features reclaimed hand hewn white oak from James & Company. The timbers are reclaimed from various barns and buildings all over the country and delivered to Alabama for hand selection.

The Davis Project is coming together, after a long search for the reclaimed white oak timbers.

Fabrication is complete and the pre-assembly begins! Doug, Todd and MJ will prefit, adjust as needed and label each timber. This will insure proper installation on job site.

As you can see, Kramer is very involved in the pre-assembly process.

At Vermont Timber Works we always pre-assemble as needed, usually not to this extent. The reclaimed timbers are so much more difficult to work with, this extra work is important. Doug will be going to the Davis Project in a site supervisory role and Michael Davis Construction will raise this frame. With any luck we will see you next week Angela!

Custom designs, traditional joinery, hand crafted timbers to the highest quality...That's what Vermont Timber Works is all about. Don't forget that these things take time. Please allow 12-14 weeks for an average size timber framing project. Planning ahead is key when choosing the custom route, whether it be custom cabinetry, custom tile arrangements or our custom designed and hand crafted post and beam timber frames. You won't find hand hewn white oak timbers like this sitting on a shelf somewhere! Isn't that beautiful? And certainly worth the wait. How about reclaimed timber? That is a tough one sometimes for lead time...as we are reminded right now.

Weathered hemlock timbers were chosen for the barn shown above. Hand hewn timbers are a wonderful way to make your new barn look like it's been around for many years. Hewn with an adze or chisel, below is the result in white oak.

A New England Post and Beam Home

From the design and engineering phase to the finished timber frame. Here is a wonderful example of a New England post and beam home.
Using traditional joinery and hand hewn white pine timbers the frame is craned into place and raised by Vermont Timber Works. Our crew does a great job, they have fun and it shows.

Look at the hand hewn timber, this frame looks like it's been in place for years and years.

From the kitchen area, throughout the first floor, you can see the post and beam construction and the warmth it creates.

Looking up to the loft and the 2nd floor area, this frame is a full timber frame, no doubt about that.

Here is our 2nd floor, they skylights add desired natural light. Very pretty.

Done. Now that is a New England Post and Beam Home. The addition in hand hewn white pine looks like it has always been there...Congrats Vermont Timber Works.
