Building a Post and Beam Home.

Building your own home is a big deal...Even better if you are building a post and beam home. This may not be your first home as post and beam construction offered by a high end timber framer will be an investment. So, maybe it's your second home?

Interested in hand crafted quality, mortise and tenon joinery and custom design? Well then, you are in the right place. Vermont Timber Works has been building timber frames for over 27 years.

So many choices, so many timber frame companies...how do you know which one is a good match for you? Do what you are doing right now, research and read about timber framers and what they offer. Ask about previous projects, clients and references. Word of mouth is a powerful thing.

From your ideas to the shop drawings to raising your post and beam home, let Vermont Timber Works give you a hand.  We are happy to talk with you, tell us about your project!

Post and Beam Warmth

Post and Beam Construction adds a feeling of warmth, don't you think so? Traditional joinery and rustic timber beams are a favorite in New England and beyond.

Just incase you need a little extra warmth this winter, maybe Ruby will let you borrow her new blanket? Or....maybe not.

Vermont Timber Works custom designs each project to suit the clients needs. Give a call to discuss your post and beam home, barn or building. We would love to be involved!

Is your guest house post and beam construction?

Well, mine isn't. (I don't even have a guest house). This guest house is all post and beam constructed. Traditional joinery and arched beams in beautiful douglas fir timbers.

Planed & chamfered with a clear poly sealer. See the natural color of the wood? Douglas fir will continue to age and become deeper in color over time. The Duker guest house is the 3rd post and beam barn on the estate. Very nice Vermont Timber!

The 1st of 3 full truckloads, these red oak timbers will create the barn shown below. Be sure to check back for progress shots.

John Rich Jr. worked closely with Sue to bring this post and beam barn project to life. Great job!

Posts and Beams and Braces and Plates and Struts?

Do you know what goes into creating a post and beam home? Let's see...

We all know about the posts and the beams but what keeps the timber frame up? Above is a typical section view to give you an idea of the many components. Connecting beams together in ways that are strong and beautiful is KEY. Timbers need to be sized appropriately and joints need to stay tight over time.
Vermont Timber Works offers traditional joinery, mortise and tenon with hard wood pegs. The joint itself carries most of the load and the peg keeps the joint in place. Steel joinery is also available.
Questions? Call 802-886-1917 or EMAIL US, we are happy to talk with you.

Post and Beam & Timber Frame Raising, Very Exciting!

Let's RAISE your Timber Frame!

Now this is the most exciting part, the raising of your post and beam frame (my opinion of course)! The crew at Vermont Timber Works takes as much pride and care in their raisings as they do in fabrication and assembly. The handcrafted quality shows. Take a look at some of my personal favorite timber frame raisings...Our Brigham Hill Barn.

The Charney Residence Post and Beam Home was my first raising. It was so fun to watch and I learned so much about our traditional joinery. Coordination between the crane and the Vermont Timber Works team needs to be right on!
Here is our Kenny Stable Horse Barn, which can be found on Martha's Vinyard. These lucky horses are surrounded by beautiful douglas fir timbers, planed & chamfered for a smooth and classic look.

If you like something a bit more rustic, take a look at our Sand's Barn. This post and beam party barn features rough sawn and weathered hemlock timbers. AND traditional joinery, of course!
This last photo is a great one. Mikey hammering in those joinery pegs. Great job Vermont Timber Works.

So you want a new BARN? How about a Post & Beam Barn?

So many styles, so many choices! When you build a custom post and beam barn. At Vermont Timber Works not only do you get a custom designed and engineered barn, it's also hand crafted. No CNC machines in our shop.

Traditional joinery, mortise & tenon with hardwood pegs, dove tails, shoulder joints...now you're talking. Need some steel joinery? Vermont Timber Works offers steel joinery also. Sometimes you see the steel and sometimes you don't.

Weathered hemlock timbers were chosen for the barn shown above. Hand hewn timbers are a wonderful way to make your new barn look like it's been around for many years. Hewn with an adze or chisel, below is the result in white oak.

Whether it be horse barn, storage barn, garage barn, residence barn, party barn or a multi-use barn...if post and beam construction interests you, give Vermont Timber Works a call. 802-886-1917 We would love to hear from you.

A New England Post and Beam Home

From the design and engineering phase to the finished timber frame. Here is a wonderful example of a New England post and beam home.
Using traditional joinery and hand hewn white pine timbers the frame is craned into place and raised by Vermont Timber Works. Our crew does a great job, they have fun and it shows.

Look at the hand hewn timber, this frame looks like it's been in place for years and years.

From the kitchen area, throughout the first floor, you can see the post and beam construction and the warmth it creates.

Looking up to the loft and the 2nd floor area, this frame is a full timber frame, no doubt about that.

Here is our 2nd floor, they skylights add desired natural light. Very pretty.

Done. Now that is a New England Post and Beam Home. The addition in hand hewn white pine looks like it has always been there...Congrats Vermont Timber Works.
